Building a real SCADA system with hardware sensors, actuators, dedicated communication links to a supervisor server is one possible way to build a SCADA lab. However, each industrial system has different sets of sensors, actuators, and configuration for its SCADA system. Some SCADA architectures are fully centralized, while some are distributed with hierarchical structure. In this presentation, we will discuss our solution on establishing a virtual SCADA system that integrates the existing infrastructure, communication middleware, databases, and the state of art HMI interface, etc. The proposed virtual SCADA platform can also implement big data analytics since the utilization of modular design concept. It can easily gather real-time data from sensors, make system state estimation, make various intelligent analysis, display on HMI interface and take actions. Also, the potential cyber threat assessment can be executed safely and efficiently based on this platform. In addition, our virtual testbed can straddle interdisciplinary boundary, and work with mechanical, aerospace, nuclear generation, and power systems, etc. to protect the SCADA systems. During the presentation, we will provide a demo to show how the proposed virtual SCADA platform works.
